The criticism of a finely tuned universe has been based more on political and ideological prejudices than on scientific evidence. Nobel Prize winners such as Anton Zeilinger (2.022) choose to “believe” as a logical consequence of their equations, standing in opposition to mainstream cancel culture and New Atheism.

For these insights alone, the book has been well worth reading:

- Against the idea of an empty and meaningless universe —that melancholic line “How much wasted space” from the film Contact— the author proposes an essentially relational reality, which some scientists —such as the witty and ironic mathematician David Berlinski— intuit as an intentional coherence rather than an accident.

- This intentionality of the cosmos is powerfully expressed in the moving letter from the mathematician Kurt Gödel to his dying mother:

“The world is not chaotic or arbitrary, but, as science shows, the greatest regularity and order reign everywhere. Order is a form of rationality. Modern science shows that our world, with all its planets and stars, had a beginning and will most likely have an end (…) if the world is organized in a rational way and has meaning, then there must be another life.”

- One of my favorite books is Don Quixote, and it was a real gem to discover its connection with Gödelian mathematics. In resolving the paradox of Chapter 45 (Part II), Cervantes anticipates a reality that modern science later confirms: the need for higher frameworks —such as those defined by an anthropic universe— to provide coherence and purpose to the fundamental laws of reality. Sancho resolves a paradox of incompleteness by appealing to mercy as a formal system superior to civil law.

- I was deeply struck by the portrait of Karl Marx. Thought and ideology have their roots in the human heart.

I recommend this book to readers tired of ideological scientism.
